While the peak season for trekking in Nepal tends to fall in spring and autumn, winter is also an incredible time to experience the wonders of the Himalayas. There is generally very little rainfall at this time of year, and travelers will be treated to snow-capped mountain peaks, cozy teahouses, and clear skies. Daytime temperatures are comfortable for trekking, and despite the cooler nights, teahouses are equipped with a wood stove to heat common areas and allow trekkers to warm up. While many people assume trekking in December will be harsh and uncomfortable, it is a great time to experience the mountains and slightly less crowded trails than in October and November. Most treks, including Everest Base Camp, are still passable at this time of year. Annapurna Base Camp, Langtang and more.
Let's have a look at the five best treks to embark on in the month of December.
Everest Base Camp Trek
Highlights
- Exciting flight from Kathmandu to Lukla
- Explore Namche Bazaar, an important part of the trading route in the Himalayas.
- Enjoy Everest Base Camp and walk on Khumbu Glacier
- Watch the sunrise over Everest from Kala Patthar
- Discover Tengboche Monastery
- Learn about Sherpa culture
One of our favorite treks for the month of December is the Everest Base Camp Trek. Anyone who loves adventure and incredible mountains will find this is their dream destination. Situated at 5,364 meters, it is a strenuous hike but well worth it. The trek begins with an exciting flight to Lukla before walking through Namche Bazaar, an important town on the trading route through Khumbu.
For those seeking a more spiritual experience, Tengboche Monastery will likely be a highlight. As the largest monastery in the region, it has important significance to locals and many Tibetan refugees who now live in the area. The view is also exceptional, with the incredible backdrop of Mount Ama Dablam. Throughout the trek, travelers will also be treated to stunning views of Lhotse, Changtse, and other surrounding peaks.
The average temperature in the Everest Region in December ranges from 15 to -20℃, with mornings and evenings being the coldest. It is important to have proper clothing and wear layers to help adjust to the varying temperatures. Despite the cool nights, the trails are enjoyable as there are fewer people making it easy to find accommodation and enjoy the peaceful environment. Additionally, trekkers should be prepared for some snowfall at higher altitudes. While this time of year generally has clear skies, the weather can be unpredictable, so it is important to be flexible.
Annapurna Base Camp Trek
Highlights
- Explore the diverse and beautiful Annapurna Conservation Area
- Enjoy breath-taking views of Machhapuchhre and other mountains in the Annapurna range
- Learn about Gurung culture and enjoy the beautiful Ghandruk village
- Watch the sunrise from the famous Poon Hill
- Soak and relax in the natural hot springs of Jhinu Danda
- Celebrate completing the difficult trek to base camp at 4130 meters
The Annapurna Base Camp is one of the most popular treks in Nepal, and for a good reason. The trail takes travelers into the stunning Annapurna Sanctuary and through unique landscapes and cultures. Additionally, the up-close view of the Annapurna range, Machhapuchhre, and Dhaulagiri is truly amazing.
For those traveling in the spring season, rhododendron blossoms will be found all along the trail adding to the beauty of the Annapurna Base Camp trek. Additionally, the area is rich in Gurung culture, drawing trekkers in and giving them a glimpse of life in rural Nepal. Poon Hill, another spectacular trek for those short on time (but is also a part of the ABC trek), offers one of the best sunrise and sunset views of the Annapurna Range. Trekkers will also be treated to the gorgeous Machhapuchhre Base Camp. Other highlights include hot springs, welcoming locals, and flourishing biodiversity.
With clear skies bringing unobstructed views of surrounding peaks, Annapurna Base Camp is one of the best treks for adventure-seekers in the month of December. With fewer crowds, no precipitation, and temperatures staying above -5OC, the early winter is an ideal time for trekking to Annapurna Base Camp. However, there are often winter storms around 2300 meters, which means trekkers should be prepared with appropriate equipment for all types of weather. It is also important to begin trekking early in the morning as there are not many hours of daylight in December.
Annapurna Poon Hill Trek
Highlights
- Enjoy the stunning sunrise from Poon Hill at 3210 meters
- Explore the Gurung village of Ghandruk and the Magar village of Ulleri
- Take in beautiful views of Dhaulagiri (8167 meters), Manaslu (8163 meters), Annapurna I (8091 meters), and more
- Walk through forests, by waterfalls, and through farmland
As previously mentioned, Poon Hill is very popular and ideal for trekking in December. This is an ideal alternative to the more extended Annapurna Base Camp Trek, as it takes only five to six days. The panoramic view is famous, and for a good reason, as it is one of the best views of the Himalayas in Nepal. Due to the low altitude at only 3210 meters, Poon Hill is passable all throughout the year.
With plenty of teahouses and many chances to visit and explore Gurung and Magar communities, the trail is comfortable but still allows travelers to learn a great deal about life in the mountains. Temples and monasteries along the trail showcase the importance of Hinduism and Buddhism in Nepal.
Although the weather is cool, with temperatures dropping to zero degrees, December is a great time to head to Poon Hill. Warm teahouses along the way allow for plenty of tea breaks, and cozy evenings around a wood fire keep travelers comfortable for the duration of the trek.
Everest Panorama Trek
Highlights
- Enjoy the energy of the Everest Region in a short period of time
- An exciting flight from Kathmandu to Lukla
- Explore the beautiful town of Namche Bazaar
- Learn about the lifestyle and culture of the Sherpa people
- Meditate at Tengboche Monastery
- Visit the Everest View Hotel, one of the highest luxury hotels in the world
The Everest Base Camp Trek is quite long, and not everyone has the time or ability to trek that far. The Everest Panorama Trek is a great alternative to get a glimpse of the world's tallest peak. In less than 11 days, trekkers will be treated to incredible views of Mount Everest, Mount Ama Dablam, Mount Lhotse, and more. The Everest Panorama Trek is also considered easy to moderate, making it doable for those with or without previous trekking experience.
Views of Mount Everest from the Everest View Hotel are truly memorable, as well as Tengboche. Here you will reach the highest point of the trek at 3860 meters. From this viewpoint, mountains, including Mount Ama Dablam and Mount Everest, are in a spectacular view. The Tengboche area is frequently called the spiritual hub of the Khumbu region because of the incredible Tengboche Monastery.
Despite the cold and risk of snowstorms, the Everest Panorama Trek is one of the safest ways to experience Mount Everest, joining trekking in December. The relatively low altitude of the trek reduces the risk of severe weather, and the lack of precipitation increases the chances of clear mountain views.
Langtang Valley Trek
Highlights
- Explore Langtang National Park, filled with diverse flora and fauna
- Learn about Tamang and Sherpa culture
- Take in Kyanjin Gompa, set against the stunning Himalayan peaks
- Walk through sloping yak pastures
- Take in beautiful views from Chorkari Ri at 5050 meters
- Support the rebuilding in one of the hardest hit areas from the 2015 earthquake
Lastly, the Langtang Valley Trek is one of the best treks to head out on in the winter season. Also known as the valley of glaciers, this is a highly recommended trekking destination. The region was heavily impacted by the 2015 earthquake but has been rebuilt with beautiful teahouses and improved facilities. The rich culture in the area adds to the extreme natural beauty.
The Langtang Valley is only 30 kilometers north of Kathmandu, making it ideal for those with little time for travel. Langtang National Park is home to incredibly diverse flora and fauna, with the addition of mountain peaks glimmering through the trees. Most people who live in the region are of Tibetan and Buddhist origin, and there are plenty of stupas and gompas in the area.
December is considered the off-season for the Langtang Valley Trek; with quiet trails and clear skies, it is still an ideal time to visit the region. There are great chances to have crystal-clear views of the entire Langtang Range and enjoy glaciers and waterfalls along the trail. Temperatures are colder than what is seen in Kathmandu; however, with appropriate clothing and equipment, it can be a very comfortable trek, even Trekking in December.
Tips for Traveling in Nepal During the Winter Season
While the winter can be an incredible time to trek in the Nepalese Himalayas, appropriate precautions should be taken to ensure trekkers’ safety. Firstly, it is not advisable to attempt high-altitude treks as it becomes difficult to navigate trails that are covered in snow. It is also important to check the weather forecast and ensure that all trekkers bring appropriate winter gear. This includes warm jackets, socks, inner wears, hats, and gloves, in addition to boots with good grip and trekking poles. Bringing extra innerwear and socks is a great idea in order for clothing to dry properly after sweating or being washed. Most teahouses do not have heating outside of the kitchen and dining areas, so most trekkers need to wear layers in order to stay warm at night.
While teahouses have blankets, a sleeping bag can help one to stay more comfortable on especially cold nights. Additionally, bring a thermos or cover to keep water warm for longer periods. It is also essential to drink adequate amounts of water to stay hydrated. However, good moisturizing cream and sunscreen are also highly recommended. The cold, dry air can cause sensitive skin, and the sun reflecting off of the snow can reflect UV rays up, causing sunburn. Like most places, the days are short, and it is important to start trekking early in the morning to avoid walking in the dark evenings. Lastly, be sure to bring extra batteries for cameras and other equipment, as cold weather often causes batteries to deplete quickly.
December is often considered to be too cold for trekking, and many people avoid traveling to Nepal during this season. However, if trekkers are well prepared and have the appropriate equipment and a well-planned itinerary, December can be an ideal time to spend a few days in the Himalayas.
